Stephen F. Barnes, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Adult Education at San Diego State University, has had a lengthy, distinguished career in public higher education. From 1977-1992 he served as a senior administrative officer of San Diego State University, and from 1992-1996 as Vice President of the California Maritime Academy. He returned to the classroom in 1997, and was the lead faculty member in Adult Education at San Diego State University (SDSU) in the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education (ARPE) within the College of Education. He also served as a Senior Research Associate and Co-Director of the Center for Educational Leadership, Innovation & Policy within the Interwork Institute.
Dr. Barnes has numerous scholarly publications and a strong record of public service as a speaker, consultant, and community leader. His major research focus is on adult learning, and with a specific emphasis on the impact of aging on cognition.
Dr. Barnes earned his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Educational Leadership, M.S. in Clinical Psychology from San Diego State University, and B.A. in Philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
